Teach Us to Number Our Days

The year 2016 has gone so fast, and now 8 days have passed as we entered the new year 2017! The Lord teaches us to number our days, for our days are short. "For a thousand years in God's sight are but as yesterday when it is past", as Moses described it in his Psalm (Psalm 90:4).

Teach Us to Number Our Days

We could plan and execute these plans flawlessly this year, but always remember that our life is but "like grass that is renewed in the morning, in the morning it flourishes and is renewed, in the evening it fades and withers." (Psalm 90:5-6) Always keep in mind that our life is short, no matter how young we are today. So it is important to see our life as how God wants us to see it - to number our days, so that we could have a heart of wisdom!

That We May Get a Heart of Wisdom

What does it mean to have a heart of wisdom?

"And he said to man,‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’” - Job 28:28

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight." - Proverbs 9:10

In short, to have a heart of wisdom is to believe in God's promises written in His Word, the Bible, and to trust that Jesus Christ is the only One who could satisfy the longing of your heart - leading you to turn away from your lifestyle of sins and living your life for God's glory!

Make it a goal this year to make your every day count as you live it for God's glory, with our hope anchored in His amazing grace!

Conquer Your Fears, Failures and the Future

What is your Fear? Are you afraid of the dark?
Frightened to take risks because of the fear of failure?
Scared of the uncertainties of the future?

Darkness is oftentimes associated with nasty monsters, creepy villains, and scary demons. Fear of the dark frequently is rooted from childhood experiences.

Fear of failures is one of the major reasons why even a very capable employee would not volunteer for an upcoming Project. He would rather choose to be silent and would just go with the flow, hoping that someday his manager would just suddenly notice him and appoint him to lead a Project.

A saying goes like this, "No one knows what the future holds." That is an accurate statement! Really, no one could predict exactly what the future may bring. These uncertainties might cause anxiety and fear to creep into you slowly every day, if not addressed properly.

How should you respond to your Fears, Failures, and the Future?

Maloi Malibiran-Salumbides, a Radio Announcer of 702 DZAS (FEBC Philippines), wrote in her article in "Protips" on July 29, 2014 Tips on How to Conquer Your Fears, Failures and the Future.

1. The best way to respond to your fears is this: Face Everything And Rise. Kaya, face your fears and rise above them. There are different kinds of phobia.
2. The best way to respond to failures: Learn from them and move-on. Marami na tayong inspiration dito. Nariyan si Manny Pacquiao na ilang beses ng natalo sa laban pero palagi pa rin bumabangon, natututo buhat sa kanyang pagkatalo at nagwawaging muli. Mistakes can be our best teachers. Conquering our failures can be our best accomplishment. Pagdating sa failure, learn from them, try again and move-on.
3. The best way to respond to the uncertainties of the future: Be still and learn to trust. Sabi nga ng awit, "I don't know about tomorrow but I know who holds my hand." Kung ang Diyos ang iyong pinagkakatiwalaan, kahit ang mga bagay na hindi mo alam ay di dapat maging dahilan upang mangamba.

But don't you know that there is a healthy kind of fear?

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;    fools despise wisdom and instruction." - Proverbs 1:7

If you fear the Lord, the Creator of everything, you won't need to be afraid of any created thing.

Even if you fail, you know that "all things work together for the good of those who love God..."

And though you are not certain of what the future holds, you are sure who holds the future - the One who is the Beginning and the End, Jesus Christ, and He promised to never leave you nor forsake you.

God's amazing grace is calling upon you, lay down your fears unto Jesus, by faith acknowledge that you need Him. Turn away from your sins. The truth is, we all do need God.

3 Things to Know About Passion

What drives your passion? Are you passionate on what you do? Or are you the typical just-go-with-the-flow guy who just wants to finish the day to go home and rest?

There is so much about PASSION that we oftentimes neglect, things that we might know already. For many, it is just a word to describe the feeling when you are so hooked into a television series, sports, or even the arts.

And when it comes to life-size Art paintings, perhaps the Sistine Chapel contains the best among all of the art works. As Wikipedia describes it:

"The composition stretches over 500 square metres of ceiling, and contains over 300 figures."

But what makes it more interesting is the person who painted all of the 300 life-size figures. While he was doing his work, he was asked why was he putting on so much effort on painting those images on corner parts of the ceiling where no one could ever notice them. His answer was remarkable:

"God will see."

The artist was Michaelangelo. HowStuffWorks describes his work as:

"Working on scaffolding was physically demanding, and Michelangelo created image after image on an ever increasing scale. He eventually exerted all the power of his mind and spirit, using themes and motifs from past sculptural works in his glorious fresco masterpiece. The four-year ordeal proved physically and emotionally agonizing for the reluctant artist."

How can a person do such a marvelous thing! Could it be that Michaelangelo found the secret to unleash his passion?

The Book of Colossians (Chapter 3; Verses 23 to 24) tells us to:

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

3 Things to Know about Passion

1. The Scope: "Whatever you do..."

This encompasses almost all of the things that you do - washing the dishes, reading a book, walking out on a cold morning for your exercise, etc. This also involves the work that you have - may it be as a teacher, an engineer, a housekeeper, a bookkeeper, a store owner, or a store keeper, etc. In short, the scope is everything that is on your reach to accomplish.

2. The Attitude: "Work heartily..."

In order to know how it is to work with all of your heart, first let us look at working halfheartedly. Have you seen someone do a task that you ask them to do halfheartedly? Isn't it that you feel that he could do even much more if he had just done it wholeheartedly? What would you feel if he did it with all of his heart? Great, isn't it? That's how to work with all of your heart. You give out all that you can, all that is from within, to complete the work. But this will be hard if you will not know the third secret.

3. The Source: "...as for the Lord and not for men."

The truth is, you cannot please everyone no matter how hard you try. Every person is unique. Every person has his own likes and dislikes. And that includes your boss, your workmates, your friends, your neighbors, your family. So instead of putting all of your effort to please men, focus on pleasing God.

But this will not mean anything to you unless you have a personal relationship with Him already. The Bible says that it is SIN that separates man from God:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23

And with SIN, we will be forever be separated from God:

"For the wages of sin is death (into hell separated from God in eternity), but the free gift of God is eternal life (to be with God in eternity) in Christ Jesus our Lord (Jesus the only way, the truth and the life)." - Romans 6:23 (parenthesis phrases mine)

You will not understand how to work for the Lord unless you know the Lord of whom you will be working for. But the good news is: God longs for you to call upon Him and to surrender your life unto Him. Turn away from your sinful lifestyle. As John 1:12 says:

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."

You call unto Jesus Christ, surrender your life unto Him and make Him your Lord and Savior. He will give you the passion that you wish to have.

3 Reasons Why Not to be Overwhelmed by Life's Storms

It is very relaxing to just look at the ocean from the shore. It brings back my memories when I would just sit back, with my feet dug down in the sand, watch as the waves go back and forth, and listen to the gentle noise of the sea.

It is quite interesting that these tiny waves could turn into monstrous ones when a storm comes, and it is not relaxing to see at all - it is overwhelmingly terrifying!

How ironic that we, most of the times, find it "amusing" to watch over those monstrous killer waves. How? We have been like Peter in the Bible. Matthew 14:25-30a narrates:

"And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink..."

What are these "gigantic waves" that could easily distract us, and eventually sink us into anxiety, depression, or fear?

Those are anything or anyone that we regard higher than God in our life's priority!

  • Career
  • Love Life
  • Family
  • Money
  • Success
  • Friends
It is very heart-breaking when the time comes that these things would fall right before your very eyes. It seems to you that you've completely lost it all.

But there is good news! Peter's story does not end there, Matthew 14:30-32 completes the story:

"But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, 'Lord, save me.' Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, 'O you of little faith, why did you doubt?' And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased."

These are something that we could learn from Peter.

3 Reasons Why Not to be Overwhelmed by Life's Storms

1. Recognize that God owns you.

When you've seen how sinful you are and have turned back from your sinful lifestyle, surrendered your life unto Jesus and accepted Him as your Lord and Savior, you have been "adopted" as a child of God! It is not based on your good works, or anything that you could give but it is based entirely on what Jesus has done on the cross. Jesus died, was buried, and lived again after three days, to prove that anyone who would put his trust on Jesus Christ will be saved - saved from his sins! From this point forward, you are His child!

May this truth sink deep in your heart - you are God's child, by His grace through your faith in Jesus Christ! If you have not made this decision yet, Jesus Christ is knocking at the door of your heart. Surrender unto Him, and let Him be the Lord and Savior of your life.

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

2. Acknowledge that God is in control.

Let's not forget that Peter is a fisherman. I think there is no fisherman who does not even know how to swim! But what did Peter do when he was starting to sink? He cried to Jesus for help!

When it seems everything is falling apart, be comforted in the truth that God is still in control.
Joseph, the Dreamer, said this unto his brothers (the ones who sold him to Egypt as a slave), even after experiencing so many evil and painful things. Joseph kept in his mind that despite every hurt and pain, God is in control!

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” - Genesis 50:20

3. Remind yourself that God knows best!

Instead of swimming away from Jesus and towards the boat, Peter cried out to Jesus to save him. Peter knew that Jesus knows best and only He can save him, especially at that moment.

It may seem unclear today, but always keep in mind that God knows the best! In the end, His great plan will prevail. So, do not lose heart!

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28

Two Logical Ways to Break a Habit

I remember the story of my father about the history of the place we are currently residing at. He vividly described that our place was once a farm field, and grass grew as tall as a man. I imagine the highways we have now were once grasslands, and I think it is due to the fact that it is a necessity to upgrade the roads to accommodate the ever increasing volume of vehicles.

Don’t you know that a habit is made just like a highway is formed? Wikipedia describes it as:

A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. Habitual behavior often goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting it, because a person does not need to engage in self-analysis when undertaking routine tasks. The process by which new behaviours become automatic is habit formation. Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form because the behavioural patterns we repeat are imprinted in our neural pathways, but it is possible to form new habits through repetition. As behaviors are repeated in a consistent context, there is an incremental increase in the link between the context and the action. This increases the automaticity of the behavior in that context. Features of an automatic behavior are all or some of: efficiency, lack of awareness, unintentionality, and uncontrollability.

When an action is done, it is being imprinted as a thin pathway in our Nervous System (the sensory and control apparatus consisting of a network of nerve cells connecting to the brain). When the same action is repeated over and over again, the pathway becomes thicker and becomes the “automatic” pathway for such an action. At this time, it seems that it is already so hard to break that habit.

But, there is still a good news for you! If you are dealing with a bad habit that you wish to break, there is still a way to make that possible.

I remember what my mentor (Angelo Gratela) told me before, “Anything that are learned, can be unlearned.”

Here are 2 uncomplicated steps to break a habit; though, these are easier said than done, and most of the times you will see yourself fighting your “automatic” urges. However, when your motivation is low, you need to identify first what is the source of that apathy.

2 Logical Ways to Break a Habit

1. Recognize the reason why you now need to break the habit.

Most of the times when a habit has already been formed, it usually is unnoticeable. And when the habit has not been noticed at all, the consequences are usually not recognized at once as well. Let me give you a clear example. It is quite late already when one starts to realize that smoking is indeed very dangerous to his health. Usually, he begins to experience hardness of breathing and he easily gets exhausted. In some cases, one does not recognize it at all which leads to serious respiratory conditions.

However, if you recognize it at the early stage and consider its consequences, you are now taking the first step to break that habit. It is extremely helpful if you would take into account the entire consequences, which could include if it might have been affecting your loved ones or your intermediate family already. This will be your driving force to push you forward in breaking that habit.

2. Break the habit with a habit.

A solid paved highway is really hard to demolish, but it is not impossible to destroy one. An old habit that is not beneficial is also hard to break, but it is not impossible to crack one as well. The only way to break a bad habit is by creating new beneficial habits. Remember the concept of “neural pathways”? In creating new habits, you are making new “possible” pathways whenever the action is initiated. Repeating these would solidify a used-to-be narrow trodden path into a great paved highway! This could mean engaging into a certain sports or task where you feel challenged. Joining a community as your support group is also important. In this way, you have someone or group of people who you are accountable to.

Actually, this is also what the Bible says in Romans 12:21:

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

We are still on the 3rd day of January, the first month of the year. I hope that you would grab this chance to start building new helpful habits today!

3 Pragmatic Steps to Prepare for the New Year

“Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.” –Denis Waitley

It is almost only a few hours remaining before the clock hits 12:00 AM on the first day of year 2014. Everyone must be so busy preparing for the celebration of the New Year! Reunions and family get-togethers are rampant here and there. Shopping malls are always crowded, and even the streets are so filled up that traffic jam is almost at its peak (you really need to bring a lot of patience with you). It seems everyone has that unexplainable joy and inexplicable bloom on their faces, getting ready to confront the upcoming year.

Then, how should we face the New Year? Do we have to gear up on something to better place ourselves in a position where success is inevitable? Here are some practical steps to make ourselves ready for 2014.

3 Pragmatic Steps to Prepare for the New Year

1. The Past is always a great teacher. Learn from it.

I have learned that success is more of a subjective thing or event. Some may define success as “the bringing of the desired results into a reality.” Some may describe it as “the accumulation of wealth, respect, and fame.” But I think the best definition for success is:

Success is “an event that accomplishes its intended purpose”.

One thing I have learned from my past, even the painful circumstances and heartbreaking moments can be considered a success if you have learned the lesson that comes with it. These lessons will make us stronger and wiser, and eventually will help us become a valuable channel of blessings to others who might be undergoing the same situation we had in the past. A story about a boy and a butterfly can teach us this kind of lesson.

“A little boy was playing outdoors and found a tiny caterpillar. He took it home and asked his mother if he could keep it and take good care of it, and his mother agreed.

The little boy put the caterpillar in a large jar together with healthy leaves and little sticks. He observed the caterpillar, feeding it with fresh new leaves, each day.

One day, the caterpillar climbed up a stick and started acting strangely. The boy asked his mother about the strange event. His mother explained to him that the caterpillar was creating a cocoon, and how it was going to go through a metamorphosis and become a butterfly.

The little boy, excited after hearing the news, watched the caterpillar every day, waiting for that time when the butterfly would come out. Then one day, a small hole appeared in the cocoon and the butterfly started to struggle to emerge.

At first, the boy was excited but soon became worried. The butterfly was struggling so hard just to get out! It seems to the boy that it looked so desperate and was making no progress.

The boy was so concerned that he decided to help. He quickly got a pair of scissors, and clipped the cocoon to make the hole bigger. The butterfly quickly came forth.

Bewildered, the boy noticed that the butterfly had a swollen body and weak shrank wings. He continued to look on the butterfly expecting that at any instant, the wings would dry out and expand to support the swollen body. But it never happened. The butterfly had never been able to fly.

Later, the boy had known that the butterfly was supposed to struggle. The butterfly’s struggle to push its way through the tiny opening of the cocoon pushes the fluid out of its body and into its wings, making them stronger.”

2. Failure to plan means you’re planning to fail.

Setting goals is a vital part of the planning stage. Without any goal, you would wander all throughout the year and you would wonder why you failed. I remember the movie “Alice in Wonderland”. The moment when Alice inquired the Cheshire Cat about some directions. The Cat then replied with a question of where would Alice want to go, but Alice answered back that she does not care much where as long as she gets “somewhere”. Then the Cheshire Cat said this to her:

"If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there."

In creating a goal, you must realize what you would want to accomplish this coming year 2014. What are the areas of your weaknesses that you would want to convert into your strengths? What are the aspects that you would want to enhance more? Then set your goal. Create a deadline for each goal. Schedule an “Evaluation Date” after the deadline for each goal. Log these all in a journal to properly guide you on your journey of accomplishing your goals.

3. Enjoy every moment.

Each day has its own sets of blessings and challenges. The past can be a great teacher if you would learn from its lessons, but it can be a terrible warden if you would dwell on it too much. The future can give you a bright hope if you would envision yourself to be a better person, but it can cause you a dreadful despair if you would anxiously worry too much about it.

A verse in the Bible says a lot on this, and just like what I have shared on my previous post about prioritizing what is more important, Do You Love Coffee?, Matthew 6:25-34 says:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

With the delight of every moment of every day, always remember that each day is indeed a blessing from God. Just like the birds of the air and the flowers of the field who do not worry at all, but the Lord provides for them, you are even much more valuable that God knows of your each and every need. If God can provide for your needs, then all you have to do is to seek Him with all of your heart.

Learn to have a balance of everything: the past and its lessons, the future and its hope, and the present and its blessings; and I assure you that you will be a better version of you this coming New Year 2014! It is a matter of perspective.

How to Understand and Interact with an Introvert

The greatest way to explain something is by using illustrations. This cartoon strip best describes what an introvert is, understanding them, and how to deal with one if you have met any already? (Oh, well.. I think we are many, so I guess you have already met a number of our species)

You may feel that I am snobbish and I hate you; but the truth is deep inside, I long to interact with you, share with you my thoughts, laugh with you, and have a meaningful relationship with you. And in my mind, I play interactive scenarios on how to reach you. It is just that whenever I see you, it seems that every plan that I have vanishes into thin air (just like a bubble that pops out), and all that I can do is just smile at you.

Okay, let us have a recap.

I would love to bond with you, but please be patient if it seems I do not care enough to reach you.
I hope this would reach you.
