Psalms and Wisdom Literature: Psalm 7

David writes a musical piece about "Taking refuge in the Lord". It can be noticed that in the first few verses, David constantly is asking the Lord to search his heart for any sins he might have committed. Though he is asking for God's help against his enemies, David is opening his heart for God to judge him according to his own righteousness.

At the end part of this chapter, David gives a warning to the wicked to repent from their sins and turn to God.

In verses 10 and 11, David says how he takes refuge in the Lord: 

"My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day."

Pentateuch and History of Israel: Genesis 8:1–19

This describes the time when the flood finally subsides at the end of 150 days. This is also the time when Noah and his family, together with all of the living creatures that were inside the ark, went out from the ark. 

My take on this is that, even though it seems we are experiencing hardships for so long already (remember, the rain was 40 days and 40 nights nonstop), these hardships will pass too. What only matters now is if we still put our faith in the Lord, even at times that we cannot fully comprehend what is happening around us.

 

Chronicles and Prophets: 1 Chronicles 8

These are the lists of the genealogy of Saul, the father of Jonathan (the bestfriend of David).

Gospels and Epistles: Luke 4:14–44

It is interesting that Jesus has just gotten back from the wilderness where he was tempted by the devil. It must be noticed that Jesus goes to the synagogue (the place of worship for a Jewish congregation) and begins His ministry. This is the time when He reads a scroll of prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
    and recovering of sight to the blind,
    to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

This is also where Jesus is rejected (at Nazareth). He starts healing and casting away evil spirits as well, and continues to preach in synagogues.

David is in great sorrow at these times. He prays for God's grace and healing. He prays for deliverance as what he says on verse 4: 

"Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love."

Pentateuch and History of Israel: Genesis 7

This describes the time when Noah, his family, and all of the pairs of animals he was instructed to gather went inside the ark. The rain fell on the earth  for forty days and forty nights. All that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind died, except for those who were inside the ark. This shows that it is faith in God, by His grace (though it is in the New Testament that grace is described in details as what Jesus Christ has done on the cross), that saves man from God's wrath.

Chronicles and Prophets: 1 Chronicles 7

These are the lists of the descendants of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher. It is interesting to know that Joshua (the son of Nun) is from the lineage of Ephraim. Joshua later became the successor of Moses as the leader of the Israelite.

Gospels and Epistles: Luke 3:23–4:13

It is interesting that Luke vividly stated the Genealogy of Jesus Christ. From Joseph (as was supposed; please know that Luke is writing for the Gentile audience and is giving the legal genealogy - in short, from Mary's line), Luke listed the roots of the lineage. It must be noted that these notable persons are part of the genealogy: 

• David the son of Jesse,
• Nathan the son of David (Luke is pertaining to Mary's lineage, while Matthew is pertaining to Joseph's lineage when he referred to Solomon the son of David),
• Boaz who married Ruth, 
• Boaz's father Sala (in Luke 3:32, but in Matthew 1:5 "Salmon"; one of the spies who eventually married Rahab), 
• Judah the son of Jacob, 
• Jacob the son of Isaac, 
• Isaac the son of Abraham, 
• Shem the son of Noah, 
• Methuselah (the oldest person to ever live: 969 years) the son of Enoch,
• Enoch "who walked with God, and was not, for God took him."

It must be noticed as well that Luke narrated the temptation of Jesus here. Let us be reminded that the only way to resist the devil is by using God's Word as the Sword to fight against his schemes. Jesus quoted God's Word in every temptation that the devil suggested on Him. This is what Romans 12:21 says: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
