More of You, Less of Me

You might have heard, "Knowledge is power!" There is truth in this. Learning more and gaining more knowledge means being one step wiser than before.

Gain more knowledge about History and we eventually become expert with Historic facts.

Gain more knowledge about Law and we eventually become expert with how Law and Justice works in the society.

Gain more knowledge about Jesus Christ through the Bible, and we are amazed and humbled at the same time!

John the Baptist was amazed and humbled when he met Jesus. (John 3:22-30)

After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized (for John had not yet been put in prison).

Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him." John answered, "A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.' The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease."

John knew that though he gained so many followers, he was just the friend of the bridegroom, and the bridegroom is Jesus Christ.

John was sent to prepare the way for the Christ, and as soon as he met Jesus he humbled himself before the Christ. It is interesting that this humility John showed came from a heart completely amazed with and in knowing Jesus - Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He [Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease. (verses 29b-30)

As we learn more about Jesus Christ of the Bible, we gain more knowledge about Him that leads to our joy being complete which should humble us more.

Human flesh craves for recognition from other people. We tend to put the spotlight to ourselves. And it is with this natural heart that we are to look to Jesus always, be amazed with His glory and power, and with all surrender we say,

"More of You [Jesus], and less of me."

And then we become transformed (Romans 12:2) to be more like Jesus as we meditate on His Word with a joyful humble heart - a heart completely surrendered to Christ.

"He must increase, but I must decrease." - John 3:30
